Montjuďc Park in Barcelona, Spain

 

Montjuďc Park is a green reference point for the culture, sports and entertainment in Barcelona. It is located on a Montjuďc mountain in a spectacular environment. Theaters and museums, fountains and gardens, sports facilities and fairground pavilions make this region of Barcelona an attractive meeting point and one of the best places to see in Barcelona.

The 1929 World’s Fair and the 1992 Olympic Games helped the region become an outstanding green area of culture, sports and entertainment.

Plaza d'Espanya is the best starting point for getting to Montjuďc Park.

The two Venetian towers of the trade fair complex is spectacular with the view of Avenida Reina Maria Cristina. There the steps will lead you up to the Palau Nacional. It is a gorgeous building with a huge dome that was built in 1929. It also houses the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) that is a permanent collection of great Romanesque and Gothic art. Palau Nacional also has a spectacular view down over the fairgrounds and fountains worth seeing.

The Magic Fountain is one the most attractive place with the evening performance of water, music, color and light. A must. There at the same level at the start of Avinguda Marqués de Comillas, you'll see two beautiful buildings worth visiting. One is the excellent reconstruction of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion with the classic example of rationalist architecture. Second one is the CaixaForum which is the new Cultural Center of “la Caixa”. It is a great example of modernist industrial architecture.

There the street leads the visitors to the Poble Espanyol that is an interesting mock village guiding the visitors to stroll through its streets and squares with full-scale replicas of architectural structures from the different Spanish regions. It is a
center for recreation and traditional crafts.

 
 

To get to the Montjuďc, there is a modern Funicular railway taking the visitors up the hill to Avenida de Miramar. The Fundació Miró, Anella Olímpica, and the fortress, Castillo de Montjuďc are worth visiting there.

At the Estadi Olímpic area you'll find the Palau Sant Jordi that is a multi-purpose building and marvel of design; Santiago Calatrava’s sculptural Telecommunications Tower; the Piscines Picornell with swimming pools; the seat of the INEFC that is a sports university. All those facilities were the settings of the 1992 Olympics. The memories of the Olympics may be seen at the Galeria Olímpica.

For the plant, nature and garden lovers there are several attractive garden in Montjuďc Park such as the Botanical Gardens (Jardín Botánico).

For the theater and cultural entertainment, Palau d'Esports on Calle Lleida and the Ciutat del Teatre are the popular places.

Nearby Paseo de Santa Madrona, the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya is another great attraction in Montjuďc Park that takes the visitors on a journey to distant periods of Catalan history.

Finally there it stands the Teatre Grec that is an open-air theatre. It gives its name to a summer festival of performing arts as well.
