Montserrat is a spectacular region located on an
impressive rounded rocky area of 1,135 meters height
and situated 40 km. on the north west of
Barcelona.
A Benedictine monastery of Montserrat which was
founded in 1025 and located over the river valley is
the famous and gorgeous spot of the region. It is
one of the best
places to see in Barcelona.
Things to Do & See
Montserrat, with the miraculous statue of the
Black Madonna-La Moreneta, is one of the most
important pilgrim way and the holy temple of
Catalonia.
Montserrat can be considered as the Benedictine
monastery that still works and teaches.
Two hermitage chapels (San Juan and San Jerónimo)
situated on the highest point of the mountain offer
outstanding landscape.
Places to visit and see include the Gothic Porch,
the Basilica and the Museum.
The Museu de Montserrat hosts an archaeological and
artistic collection worth seeing.
One of the best attraction is to experience the
singing and recitals of the Escolanía, the oldest
boys’ choir formed by 50 gifted young voices. The
choir takes place on Fridays at 01.00 pm. and
Sundays at 12.00 pm. and 06.45 pm.
A nature walk to Santa Cova (Holy Cave) is another
great attraction in Montserrat.
Visitors are able to find quality honey and cheese
of the region worth buying.

How to
Get there?
By road
AP-7 highway (Martorell exit) and C-16
(Montserrat exit)
By bus
"Juliá Co. Bus" leaves regularly from Plaza
Països Catalans, next to Estación Sants railway
station.
By rail
Generalitat trains depart from Plaza Espanya and
go to Monistrol station. From there, you can catch
the "Aeri de Montserrat" cable car.
TIP : Special ticket called "Tot Montserrat"
includes the transportation and other services to
facilitate access and visit to the monastery may be
purchased at the station on Plaza Espanya. |
