Festivals & Traditions in Costa Brava

Costa Brava has an age-old culture and traditions carved in numerous beautiful fiestas. As an example, the Sardana dance is a well known popular Catalonian tradition that is widespread to any town and Sunday of the year. There are numerous specific events and festivals taking place only on certain dates and regions.

The Pilgrim’s Vow (Voto del Peregrino) in Tossa de Mar on January. This is an extremely old annual tradition in Costa Brava dating back to the 15th century. As a summary, the people of Tossa de Mar wished to appreciate the ending of the black plague and solemnly promised to send a pilgrim to the Hermitage Chapel of Sant Sebastià in Santa Coloma de Farners. That vow has been repeated for the last five centuries. The person who is chosen to be the pilgrim leads the march. Nowadays this is a massive event with festivities.

Dance of Death (Danza de la Muerte) in Verges on holy Thursday. This is the traditional Easter event takes place in the Ampurdan village of Verges. The famous “Dance of Death” takes place. A commemoration for  the passion of Jesus Christ. The origin of the dance dates back to mediaeval ages and the festival has officially been declared a Fiesta of National Interest.

Flower show in Girona during the 2nd fortnight in May. Old Quarter of Girona turns into a huge eye-catching, brilliantly colored garden. The gardening schools and florists decorates the town, courtyards and buildings in a charming look with flowers.

Calella de Palafrugell on July.
Singing of Habaneras.
This is a popular event held on the first Saturday in July on the beach of Portbou de Calella. The air is fulfilled with habaneras between the sips of burnt rum. The songs sang are from Catalonian seafarers who have
sailed the Antilles route in the 19th century.

Palamós and Llancà in Lloret de Mar on July. Seaborne processions. It is the feast of the Virgin of Carmen on 16th of July. The time when sailors pay homage to their patron saint by festooning their boats with charming decorations and parading across the waters of the Costa Brava.

International Fireworks Competition in Blanes on the 2nd fortnight of July. This is a great fiesta of light and color taking place against the backdrop of the broad expanse of the bay of Blanes. With an enthralled mass audience, rockets shoot to skywards and reflected in the dark waters of the night with spectacular display. Excellent festivity.

Laúdes and Lateen Sail Regattas in Cadaqués between July and August. Laúdes  are typical Catalonian craft that have been revived in a number of seaside villages on the shores around Cape Creus. These original regattas serve to recall the origins of inshore sailing.

Living nativity scene (Pesebre Viviente) in Pals on the 2nd fortnight in December.
Many towns hold their own living nativity scenes but the one in Pals is highly recommended. The streets and squares of this mediaeval town which is officially declared a monumental artistic ensemble in 1966, are the perfect stage set for this representation of the traditional, religious iconography commemorating Christmas.
