Side Trips & Excursions on the Southern Costa Brava


Side trips along the southern Costa Brava offers great experiences for the travelers. The southern part of Costa Brava directs to the district of La Selva. "Selva" means "jungle". La Selva district of Costa Brava occupies the southernmost part of the Girona province and extends from the mountain area of Guilleries Range and Montseny Massif all the way down through the sea.

Blanes along the coastal belt, is the spot where the Costa Brava formally begins. Sa Palomera Rock is a wonderful promontory of the area. Blanes has a beautiful seaside promenade.

With its sheltered environment Blanes eventually have become a major tourist resort attracting a growing number of summer holidaymakers and residents. Blanes offers many attractions for the tourists. The most fascinating one is the Mar i Murtra Botanical Garden located on the slopes of Mountain Sant Joan (St. John). The view of the sea and the garden is outstanding. Variety of botanical species make the garden unrivalled. A visit to the garden is a must.


Small inlets and the coves of Sant Francesc and Boadella are the wonderful spots along the coast between Blanes and Lloret de Mar. There is another botanical garden by the Santa Cristina cove. A visit to that Pinya de Rosa Garden, would be a nice attraction as well. Costa Brava is truly a land of flowers so there are many more gardens to come out on the way along the Costa Brava coasts.

Lloret te Mar is probably the largest tourist centre on Costa Brava. There are numerous hotels, holiday apartments and night spots such as the Gran Casino. It has a great nature in the company of pine forest hills, beautiful bays and sea. The spas of Caldes de Malavella and Santa Coloma de Farners lies beyond the Lloret de Mar springs. The modern Bus & Coach Station shows the importance of Lloret de Mar as a rail and road hub for the travelers. The Santa Clotilde Gardens designed in 1919 is a special mention to visit. The gardens are spread through a great mansion housing valuable art collections among the beautiful surroundings with impressive sea views. You may also experience the Roman history and fine arts at the Museo de Lloret de Mar. The nightlife in Lloret is excellent with quality nightclubs, discos and bars.

Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar is the next stop following the coastal road among the pine groves with the bluest Mediterranean in the background. Here, the picturesque postcard view of the Vila Vella mesmerizes the visitors at first sight. Officially declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument, Tossa de Mar is the sole example of a fortified mediaeval town left standing on the Catalonian coast. Round arched gate frames the entrance way through Vila Vella dotted with defensive walls, towers and beautiful narrow streets. A stroll through these alleyways is a must for the travelers. Tossa de Mar has a beautiful bay and the beach on the sandy coast really is fashionable. Many holidaymakers prefer to spend time and enjoy the sun on Tossa de Mar beaches.

For the history lovers, the ruins and mosaics of ancient Roman villa on Avenida de Pelegri and the ruins of the first parish church of the gothic Iglesia de San Marti city may be visited. The archaeological remains of the Roman villa that once existed here, today the centre of a town converted into a colorful though peaceful family holiday resort.

The road from Tossa de Mar to Sant Feliu de Guixols lets the travelers to enjoy the unique view along the calm coves and inlets of Bona, Pola, Giverola and Salions. Taking a cruise and discover these coasts would be a great attraction as there are boats between the towns and some of the coves on the stretch from Blanes to Sant Feliu. Travelers shouldn't miss the chance of sailing in the waters of the Costa Brava and enjoying an exceptional sea trip.
