Spain has
long been the
destination of choice
for people looking for
great value holidays.
The country has a little
bit of everything
(actually, rather a lot
of everything): history,
art, great climate,
food, natural beauty,
friendly locals, it’s a
great place to visit at
almost any time of the
year.
However, with the
economic crisis,
holidays in Spain have
become a little more
expensive, even through
specialist providers
like On The Beach, so if
you’re looking for a
really cheap holiday
here are five tips for
saving the pennies.
Currency Exchange
Getting a good deal on
foreign currency is
probably the most
important element of
saving money on holiday.
A lot of people exchange
money on the high street
at not particularly
generous rates, and, if
you’re exchanging a lot
of money, that can get
expensive.
One idea to avoid that
is simply to ask your
friends, swapping euros
for pounds directly is
always cheapest.
Secondly, get a travel
cash card, these can be
used in any ATM machine
and usually have
extremely low (if not
0%) commission and great
exchange rates.
Book Early
When it comes to package
holidays you might save
money booking earlier,
but package holidays
aren’t always the
cheapest way to do it.
When it comes to
flights, you’ll
definitely save a lot of
money by booking early,
as well as with any
internal transfers that
you take.
Rent A Car
If you’re planning on
doing some exploring,
renting a car is
definitely the best way
to get around. Not only
can you find
accommodation off the
beaten track (which is
usually far cheaper) but
you can also save a lot
on public transport
(which is very good in
most parts of Spain, but
can get expensive).
Shop Around
Insurance is important
for any traveller,
whether you’re going for
a long stint travelling
or the shortest of
breaks. It doesn’t have
to be expensive, and a
quick trip to a
comparison website like MoneySuperMarket could
save you quite a lot of
money.
Avoid the Tourist
Hotspots
Barcelona is an amazing
place to visit, but it’s
also an expensive place
to visit so if you’re
really looking to save
money, it might be worth
giving the top tourist
destinations a miss. Try
out smaller places like
Valencia, which are less
popular but equally
fantastic, or explore
the coastlines a little
more and get away from
the resorts. |
