Transportation in Spain

 

Overview
Spain has several international airports and domestic flights are popular and easiest way to get around in Spain.

The major airports are located in Madrid-Barajas, Gerona, Barcelona, Reus, Bilbao, Asturias, Santiago, Vigo, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Almeria, Malaga, Jerez, Sevilla, Ibiza, Palma, Menorca, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.

The airports in Spain are fully modern and has great connections to city centers by taxis or buses and also by train.

Bus tours are popular in Spain and especially the guided ones are great as they enable the visitors to navigate the country easily.

All of Spain's regions are connected with railway network and it is the cheapest in Europe. That's why there are a lot large and well equipped railway stations throughout the country. Variety of shops and conveniences are located at the stations.

Some of the Spain cities offer river boat tours which is very popular. Also vehicle rentals like motorcycles are popular with the lovely weather.

In Spain you won't get lost. In every Spanish town there is a tourist information center and they provide holidaymakers with maps and information about the sights and attractions about the region and the cities.

 
 

Requirements to drive and rent a car in Spain
You must have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years old to drive and 21 years old to rent a car in Spain. Most car hire companies require a driver's license for a minimum of one or two years. Car rentals in Spain is via credit cards.

The citizen of the EU countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein or the countries that has adopted the standard license as agreed in the Geneva or Vienna conventions only require a valid driver’s license. The rest of the countries' citizens will require an International Driver’s License.

Things you should know when you drive in Spain
The road safety regulations when you drive in Spain include;

  • Talking on a mobile phone is prohibited while driving unless using a hands-free system.

  • Car radios and mobile phones must be switched off on re-fuelling.

  • Children under 3 years of age must be strapped into a suitable seat for their weight and height.

  • A reflective jacket must be used while getting out of the car on the road or the hard shoulder.

  • Warning triangles must be deployed if vehicle has stopped on the road or hard shoulder.

  • Established speed limits must be obeyed which are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on main roads, 90 km/h on other roads and 50 km/h in urban areas.

  • Alcohol levels must not exceed 0.5 g/l in the bloodstream (0.25 mg/l in exhaled air).

  • Seatbelts must be worn by driver and all passengers in front and back seats.

  • Helmets must be worn on motorbikes, mopeds and bicycles.
