The main
attractions are the ninots; massive
cardboard, wood and plaster statues located
all over the city which portray a satirical
version of current events whether it be
about politicians, celebrities, or the both
combined.
On the 19th of March, they are
burned during ‘La Crema’, which involves
setting their firework-filled fuselages on
fire and standing well back.
Alongside
setting things on fire, the ‘Las Fallas’
festival in
Valencia
includes beauty pageants, paella
contests, parades, bullfights, and many,
many fireworks.
A particular
highlight of the festival are the daily
2p.m. ‘mascleta’ held in the Town Hall
square, during which a huge pile of
firecrackers is ignited, shaking the ground
for ten minutes.
